ait benhando & ouarzazate

From the High Atlas to the Sahara Desert. We happened upon a market on theoutskirts of a small town. Hay anyone?

These huge trucks are filled with all sorts of manufactured goods, mainly plastics, and then go from small town to small town selling. Mobile store. If the customers can't get to you, go to them.

We saw a sign for Ait Benhandou, a small town where several movies were filmed. On the hilltop, the old medina looked abandoned and very impressive.

Driving about half an hour south of Ouarzazate (a large tourist town on the highway) we saw a dirt road off the main road. It was close to sunset and we wanted to set up camp. We pulled up the road, which took us up a rocky hill. We felt like we were suddenly on mars. the land was consistently hard and rocky. the surrounding hills were the same. There was a river to our south. there was a heard of about 100 goats and an old herder. He was bringing his goats home.

He stopped by our van to say hi, asked where we were from, and invited Brian (Susana was in the back of the van and old man didn't see her) to his house for a smoke and tea. Brian smiled and kindly said no. He waved bye and walked along with his goats towards the river. It was almost surreal to see so many goats slowly walk towards and past you. Here he is walking the goats down the hill.
